Introduction to Horse Handling with Jeffrey Spooner
August 23-24, 2008
Mr. Spooner’s presentation was excellent. [This class] was well worth my 6-hour drive and hotel stay. I highly recommend the class to beginners and anyone who wants to gain experience with a variety of different horse “personalities.”
Instructor background: Jeff’s experience training horses and police dogs and his background as a trainer of people makes him well qualified to lead this class.
Course preparation: The classroom information was well-organized in a Power Point presentation and here was a booklet of talking points and places for note-taking. Jeff also provided his own insight from years of experience with horses.
Course presentation: The information was clearly presented in an order and pace that was easy to follow. Jeff made sure to check for understanding and give opportunity for asking questions. He was able to clarify and elaborate on concepts showing an in-depth knowledge of what he was presenting and a consideration for the needs of the individual student.
Hands-on work with the horses: Jeff’s horses are in excellent condition and offered a variety of dispositions to work with. He was able to demonstrate a large number of equine behaviors and herd dynamics and clearly explained what to look for in the body language of the horses. When it was my turn to handle the horses, Jeff was patient and gave clear instructions to help me improve. I especially enjoyed working with the colts.
General: I really appreciated Jeff’s patience and his willingness to repeat instructions and answer questions that related to my own horses. He helped me with things I could take home and apply immediately. The class delivered practical skills and not just theory. I was impressed with Jeff’s depth of knowledge and personal acquaintance with respected top-level trainers, his desire to continue to improve his skills, his respect for the animals, and his willingness to share with people who attend his class. It is obvious that Jeff has the background and skill to translate what he knows to benefit the people who take his classes.
